FEN Internal Quality Assurance Board
The IQA Board is a sub-board of the FEN Board. Internal quality assurance has critical importance in providing quality assurance for the assessments and accreditation of the qualifications undertaken. Its functions directly influence the performance of delivery and assessment teams, learner’s progress, learners and employers views on training, centres policy and the reputation of the qualification (Greer I. 2019. 7th ed. Vocational Assessors Handbook. Kogan Page, London),
The board supports assessors working in clinical practice by providing:
- Our Assessor programme – all available now on recorded webinars – the curriculum for which has been developed to deliver the against Level 3 CAVA (Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement). To be an assessor you will also need to have proficiency or expertise in Emergency Nursing.
- Library of recorded webinars that provide detailed information on how to assess others including how to mark written work in portfolios and how to gain a consistent approach between learners.
- monthly webinar – third Thursday of the month starting at 19:00. This allows assessors to meet, discuss our assessment proformas available on our website, support assessors through any claims, concerns or issues they may have, provide networking opportunities.
- assessors with an assessor hub, led by an Internal Quality Assurer. this provide support for individual assessors, links assessors so that they share assessments of case reviews and provide a support network.

FEN’s Quality Assurance Process for our qualification includes a three stage process:
- An Workplace Assessor assesses the learner in the workplace and signs the learner off as having met the assessment criteria. The assessor will then do a formal sign-off to state that all learning outcomes have been achieved. Assessors will:
- Be a proficient or expert Emergency Nurses working at an enhanced or advanced level of practice,
- Be recognised as an assessor by workplace
- Be familiar with the FEN assessment tool
- Have evaluations of watching sessions 1, session 2 and session 9 of our recorded webinars.
- FEN’s Internal Quality Assurance Board will ensure the quality assurance process:
- Ensure appropriate policies and practices are in place and followed to meet the Awarding Body requirements.
- Facilitate the Electronic invigilated Controlled Assessment that learners have to successfully completed for every unit accredited.
- Assessors submit the learner’s completed and signed off unit to FEN’s Internal Quality Assurance Board( IQAB). IQAB will
- Review each of the units presented and ensure that the Assessor has met VARCS principles i.e. that the evidence assessed is Valid, Authentic, Reliable, Current and Sufficient.
- Ensure that assessments made are standardised between assessors
- Provide assessors with feedback
- Apply for the credits for each unit presented and for the qualification on completion of the four units.
- Awarding Body External Quality Assurer will
- On an annual, or more frequent, basis review and quality assure a sample of the units that have been accredited
- Review the policies and procedures and ensure due diligence in compliance
- Provide FEN and Awarding body with feedback.
