About Claire

I qualified from Cardiff University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree and have worked in South Wales ever since. The first two years of my career I worked as a registered nurse in vascular surgery in University Hospital of Wales. In 1998 I began my career as an emergency care nurse in the Emergency Department of the Royal Gwent Hospital. After 7 years as an emergency care nurse I commenced my career as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) working in the Emergency Department and satellite minor injury units.

Between the years of 2009-2011 I was seconded to the role of Associate Lecturer for Advanced Nursing Practice in Cardiff University School of Health Care Sciences. This role involved teaching and assessing both pre and post graduate nurses whilst planning nursing education programmes and curriculum.

I have completed a Masters in Nursing Science through Cardiff University and a post graduate certificate in non-medical prescribing through South Wales University. I am currently working towards a Professional Doctorate in Advanced Health Care and due to complete my research in 2019. My Doctoral research involves exploring the relationship between patient’s socio-demographic profile and the value of using an Emergency Nurse Practitioner led Minor Injury Unit.

I currently sit on the board for the Faculty of Emergency Nursing (FEN) and am involved in the development of UK nursing competencies in relation to emergency care with particular focus on the implementation of nursing competencies in regards to the care of patients presenting with minor injuries.

I am actively involved in strategic planning and evaluating minor injury services in ABUHB and have been able to provide clinical guidance in regards to setting up nurse led minor injury services. I have also been actively involved in the development and implementation of an all Wales Emergency Nurse Practitioner competency and education framework.

In March 2016 I was appointed into the role of Consultant Nurse for Emergency Care in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB). This role involves direct involvement with advanced nursing practice, planning and implementing research, education of nurses and other health care professionals and strategic development of the emergency care agenda. I am also currently the chair of the all Wales Consultant Nurse, Midwife and Health Professional forum (CNMHP).
